Antique & Vintage Sunburst Mirrors

Vintage Sunburst Mirrors: An Icon of Twentieth-Century Interior Design

A sunburst mirror is instantly recognisable by the decorative rays extending around its central reflective glass.

These rays may be arranged in regular geometric patterns or shaped to resemble leaves, branches and sculptural ornaments.

Solar motifs have appeared in decorative arts for centuries, but sunburst mirrors became particularly associated with twentieth-century interiors.

Vintage designs from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s are especially admired for their varied materials, expressive shapes and decorative appeal.

Today, an antique or vintage sunburst mirror can become a striking focal point in an elegant interior.

Different Types of Antique and Vintage Sunburst Mirrors

Vintage Rattan Sunburst Mirrors

Rattan was widely used in twentieth-century decorative furniture and accessories.

Its flexibility allows the creation of curved rays, openwork patterns and beautifully shaped frames.

Vintage rattan sunburst mirrors are appreciated for their light appearance, natural tones and graceful silhouettes.

Some examples from the 1960s and 1970s feature particularly generous dimensions or elaborate radiating designs.

Antique Wicker Sun Mirrors

Wicker mirrors introduce attractive woven textures and natural decorative details.

Depending on the design, their rays may be narrow, grouped together or arranged around several concentric circles.

Their soft natural colours complement wooden furniture, ceramics and understated interiors.

Vintage Bamboo Sunburst Mirrors

Bamboo and bamboo-inspired frames create distinctive decorative shapes.

Some feature simple geometric rays, while others combine straight lines, curves and openwork elements.

Genuine bamboo should be distinguished from wood or other materials shaped to imitate its appearance.

Antique Carved Wooden Sunburst Mirrors

Carved wooden mirrors display a beautiful variety of decorative details.

Some feature leaf-shaped rays, while others have elongated or stylised ornaments.

Dark wood, painted finishes and natural patina highlight the craftsmanship of these decorative frames.

A vintage sunburst mirror with sculpted foliage can become a particularly attractive wall feature.

Vintage Gilded Metal Sunburst Mirrors

Metal sunburst mirrors are appreciated for their slender rays and elegant reflective finishes.

Their designs may feature straight, curved, irregular or geometric elements.

A gilded finish, sometimes softened by age, can introduce a refined decorative accent.

Depending on their design, these mirrors may complement Art Deco-inspired, mid-century or contemporary interiors.

Sunburst Mirrors from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s

Sunburst mirrors are strongly associated with mid-century decorative design.

During the 1950s and 1960s, designers and manufacturers explored a variety of materials, including metal, carved wood and natural fibres.

Rattan, wicker, bamboo and sculptural wall decorations also became prominent features of later vintage interiors.

However, decorative appearance alone cannot establish the exact age of a mirror.

A modern reproduction may resemble a genuine 1960s design.

At Brocante Déco, our selection focuses on original antique and vintage pieces, with dates or periods indicated when sufficiently reliable information is available.

How Can You Recognise an Authentic Vintage Sunburst Mirror?

Several characteristics may help when evaluating an antique or vintage mirror.

Frame Construction

Examine how the rays are attached, how the wood is carved or how the natural fibres are woven.

These details can offer clues about manufacturing methods.

Materials

Rattan, bamboo, wicker, wood and metal each possess distinctive construction characteristics.

Natural Signs of Age

Colour variations, surface wear and aged finishes may be consistent with an older object.

However, patina alone does not establish authenticity or a manufacturing date.

The Reverse Side

Original hanging hardware, construction details, labels and other markings may provide useful information.

Mirror Glass Condition

Antique reflective surfaces may display scratches, small dark spots or deterioration of their backing.

These signs should be distinguished from cracks or structural damage that could affect safety.

Identifying a genuine vintage mirror requires considering several characteristics together.

What Size Sunburst Mirror Should You Choose?

A sunburst mirror differs from an ordinary wall mirror because its decorative frame may occupy considerably more space than the reflective glass.

Two measurements are particularly important.

Overall diameter refers to the complete width of the mirror, including its decorative rays.

Central mirror diameter describes the actual reflective surface.

A large sunburst mirror may therefore create a dramatic decorative effect even when its central glass is relatively small.

Before purchasing, measure the available wall space and consider nearby furniture, doors and other decorative features.

Frame depth may also be important, especially for sculptural wooden designs.

Where Should You Display a Vintage Sunburst Mirror?

Sunburst mirrors can create beautiful decorative effects in different rooms.

Above a Sideboard

A carved wooden or gilded metal sunburst mirror can become the focal point of a wall.

In an Entrance Hall

A rattan or wicker design can introduce an elegant decorative feature above a console table.

In a Living Room

A large sunburst mirror can be displayed individually or combined with smaller pieces.

In a Bedroom

A smaller vintage mirror with delicate rays can complement a chest of drawers or traditional dressing table.

In a Home Office

A sunburst mirror can add visual interest to a wall display featuring framed prints and decorative objects.

Choose a position where the complete frame can be appreciated.

Creating a Gallery Wall with Vintage Sunburst Mirrors

Combining several sunburst mirrors offers an opportunity to experiment with materials, dimensions and decorative shapes.

Different sizes introduce variety, while combinations of rattan, metal and wood create attractive contrasts.

For example, a natural rattan mirror may be displayed alongside a gilded metal design and a dark wooden sunburst mirror.

To achieve a harmonious result, choose a common feature such as colour, material or overall decorative style.

Arrange the mirrors on the floor before selecting their final positions.

Leaving sufficient space between the frames allows each piece to retain its individual character.

Caring for Antique and Vintage Sunburst Mirrors

Sunburst mirrors often have numerous decorative rays and delicate details that require careful handling.

For carved wooden frames, a soft brush can help remove dust from the ornamental surfaces.

Rattan, wicker and bamboo should be handled gently, particularly when older fibres have become fragile.

Avoid abrasive products on gilded metal or historic decorative finishes.

Clean reflective glass carefully with a soft cloth, avoiding moisture along the edges where it could damage the mirror backing.

Loose rays, weakened joints and old hanging fixtures may require attention.

Before hanging an antique mirror, ensure that its supporting hardware is secure and suitable for the mirror's weight and the wall construction.
