Salt Boxes

The History of Antique Enamel Salt Boxes

Before modern kitchen storage solutions became commonplace, traditional salt boxes were familiar accessories in many homes.

Designed to keep cooking salt close at hand, they were often placed near the food preparation area, either on kitchen furniture or mounted directly on a wall.

Enamelled metal models combined a practical metal structure with a colourful protective finish. Some featured wooden lids, while others were made entirely from metal.

Beyond their original purpose, these attractive objects now offer a fascinating glimpse into domestic traditions and decorative tastes of earlier generations.

Different Types of Antique Salt Boxes

Wall-Mounted Enamel Salt Boxes

Designed to hang on a wall, these traditional containers made salt easily accessible while cooking.

Their shapes, mounting systems and lids are among the distinctive characteristics that help identify different models.

Antique Salt Boxes with Wooden Lids

The combination of enamelled metal and natural wood gives these objects a particularly attractive appearance.

Their lids may feature different shapes, finishes and signs of use, reflecting the history of each piece.

Vintage B.B. Enamel Salt Boxes

Certain salt boxes bearing B.B. makers' marks are appreciated by collectors of French enamelware.

Different models may feature floral decorations, colourful stripes or original reference numbers that help distinguish individual designs.

At Brocante Déco, you may discover B.B. enamel salt boxes with distinctive decorative details, depending on availability.

How Can You Identify an Antique Enamel Salt Box?

Several characteristics can help establish the origin and approximate period of a traditional salt box.

Materials

Enamelled metal, wooden lids and original fittings can provide information about an object's construction.

Decorative Patterns

Floral designs, coloured borders, stripes and enamel finishes contribute to the individual character of each model.

Makers' Marks and Inscriptions

A manufacturer's mark, reference number or original inscription may help identify a particular design or collection.

Construction Details

The shape of the lid, assembly methods, wall-mounting fixtures and manufacturing finishes can provide additional clues.

Condition

Signs of use, enamel chips, corrosion and possible restorations are important details to consider before purchasing.

These characteristics may help estimate an object's manufacturing period, although an exact date cannot always be established.

Can Antique Enamel Salt Boxes Still Be Used?

An antique salt box may retain its original functional appearance, but its suitability for food storage should never be assumed.

Worn enamel coatings, possible corrosion, the condition of wooden components and uncertainty about historical materials may present potential safety concerns.

Unless food-contact suitability has been reliably established, we recommend using these vintage containers for decorative purposes or storing suitable non-food accessories.

Decorating with Vintage French Salt Boxes

Antique enamel salt boxes offer beautiful decorative possibilities.

In a kitchen, a vintage salt box can be mounted on a wall or displayed on a shelf alongside an antique coffee pot, traditional glass jars or a wooden coffee grinder.

On a sideboard, it can become part of an elegant arrangement of carefully selected vintage objects.

In a utility room or workshop, a traditional salt box may be repurposed to hold suitable small accessories, provided its condition and strength allow.

Blue enamel finishes, delicate floral decorations and wooden lids create attractive combinations of colours and materials.
