Antique Tableware & Dining Accessories

Antique Tableware: A Heritage of Craftsmanship and Elegance

The art of table setting has played an important role in the history of decorative arts and domestic life.

Throughout the centuries, porcelain manufacturers, pottery workshops, glassmakers and silversmiths developed beautiful objects for everyday meals, special occasions and elegant entertaining.

Delicately decorated plates, finely crafted cutlery, refined glassware and traditional serving pieces reflect the attention once given to the appearance of the dining table.

Today, antique tableware offers wonderful opportunities to create individual table settings, complete collectible services and rediscover the decorative qualities of traditional craftsmanship.

Some are offered as matching sets, while individual pieces may help complete an existing collection.

Antique Serving Pieces

Soup tureens, sauceboats, vegetable dishes, compotiers and decorative serving platters hold a special place in traditional tableware.

Their elegant shapes and decorative details also make them attractive objects for interior display.

Some retain original hallmarks or manufacturers' marks that may provide useful information about their origin.

Cut glass, enamelled decoration, engraved patterns and unusual shapes contribute to their individual appeal.

Antique Cutlery and Flatware Sets

Vintage forks, spoons, knives, serving utensils and matching flatware sets offer an interesting glimpse into traditional silversmithing and cutlery design.

Original marks and hallmarks may help collectors identify particular manufacturers or production periods.

Traditional French Bowls

Antique ceramic, earthenware and porcelain bowls often feature floral designs, geometric patterns or traditional decorative motifs.

They are appreciated by collectors and lovers of vintage kitchenware for their shapes, colours and craftsmanship.

Antique Salt Cellars and Salt and Pepper Sets

These small table accessories can bring delightful decorative details to a carefully arranged table.

Made from glass, ceramic, porcelain or metal, they feature a wide variety of forms and designs, sometimes accompanied by matching spoons or holders.

Historic Manufacturers and Traditional Decorative Styles

Antique tableware offers an opportunity to explore the history of French and European craftsmanship.

Manufacturers associated with collectible porcelain and earthenware include Gien, Sarreguemines, Lunéville, Saint-Amand, Quimper and Villeroy & Boch.

Some pieces retain original backstamps, signatures, pattern numbers or other inscriptions that may help identify their origin.

Silver and silver-plated objects may also feature hallmarks or manufacturers' marks.

However, an original mark alone does not always establish an exact manufacturing date. Accurate identification generally requires examining several characteristics together.

How to Create an Elegant Table with Antique Tableware

An elegant dining table does not necessarily require a perfectly matching dinner service.

Combining antique plates with complementary patterns, mixing vintage glassware or displaying a distinctive serving piece can create a beautiful and personal arrangement.

Choose a Harmonious Colour Palette

White porcelain, blue-and-white earthenware, delicate floral decorations and clear glass can complement one another beautifully.

Combine Different Materials

Porcelain, earthenware, crystal, glass, silver and silver-plated metal create elegant contrasts in texture and appearance.

Highlight a Statement Piece

An antique soup tureen, large serving platter or decorative coffee service can become the centrepiece of a table setting.

Mix Historical Periods

Antique tableware can complement contemporary dining interiors, introducing refined contrasts between modern shapes and traditional decorative details.

The key is to create balanced arrangements that allow each piece to be appreciated.

How to Choose and Collect Antique Tableware

Before purchasing an antique tableware item, several characteristics are worth considering.

Materials and Manufacturing Techniques

Porcelain, earthenware, stoneware, glass, crystal and metal each possess distinctive qualities and manufacturing characteristics.

Makers' Marks and Backstamps

Manufacturers' marks, hallmarks and pattern references may help identify individual pieces or find matching items.

Dimensions and Shapes

Plate diameters, cup capacities and serving dish proportions can be especially important when completing an existing service.

Condition and Preservation

Signs of use, chips, cracks, glaze crazing, worn gilding and previous restorations should always be examined carefully.

At Brocante Déco, individual product photographs and descriptions help you appreciate the particular characteristics of each piece.

Can Antique Tableware Still Be Used?

Some antique tableware may remain suitable for practical use, but food-contact safety should never be assumed.

Old glazes, decorative finishes, previous restorations, material composition and general condition may require particular caution.

Antique porcelain, earthenware and decorative glass should not automatically be considered dishwasher-safe, microwave-safe or resistant to sudden temperature changes.

Unless food-contact suitability has been reliably established, we recommend decorative or collectible use.
