Spice Jar Sets

Antique Enamel Spice Jar Sets: A Tradition of French Kitchenware

In traditional French kitchens, matching spice jar sets were once familiar household accessories.

Displayed on shelves or kitchen furniture, these containers were designed to store essential ingredients used in everyday cooking.

Made from enamelled metal, they combined practical construction with colourful decorative finishes.

Original lettering, floral patterns, checked designs and geometric ornaments gave each collection its own character.

Today, antique French enamelware spice jars are appreciated by collectors and vintage enthusiasts for their distinctive designs and connection to domestic history.

Antique B.B. Enamel Spice Jars and Decorative Patterns

Among the collectible examples of French enamelware are spice jar sets bearing B.B. makers' marks.

Different models feature characteristic decorative details, including blue checks, floral garlands, contrasting colours and traditional ingredient labels.

Some pieces retain original reference numbers, which may help collectors identify matching containers.

At Brocante Déco, our selection may include B.B. blue-checked spice jars and examples bearing the SPHINX-ÉLITE name, depending on availability.

Each piece deserves careful examination of its decorative pattern, dimensions and original markings.

How Can You Identify Antique Enamel Spice Jars?

Several characteristics may help establish the origin and approximate period of an antique enamelware set.

Original lettering and makers' marks

Ingredient labels, manufacturers' references and stamped markings can provide useful identification clues.

Decorative patterns and colours

Floral motifs, checks, ornamental borders and colour combinations distinguish different collections.

Shapes and construction

Container dimensions, lid designs, handles and manufacturing details can help compare individual pieces.

Condition and signs of age

Wear, enamel chips, corrosion and previous restorations are important characteristics to examine.

These details may help identify a particular series, although appearance alone cannot reliably establish its exact manufacturing date.

How Can You Complete an Antique Spice Jar Set?

Over time, many antique spice jar sets have become incomplete, with individual containers lost, damaged or separated from their original collection.

When looking for a replacement, it is important to compare dimensions, lettering, decorative patterns, colours and any available reference numbers.

Two jars bearing the same manufacturer's name do not necessarily belong to the same collection.

Individual antique enamel spice jars can therefore be especially interesting for collectors wishing to complete an existing set.

Can Antique Enamel Spice Jars Still Be Used?

Even when antique enamelware appears to be in good condition, its suitability for food storage should never be assumed.

Old coatings, enamel chips, corrosion and uncertainty about the original materials may present potential food safety concerns.

Unless food-contact safety has been reliably established, we recommend using these vintage containers for decorative purposes or non-food storage.

Decorating with Vintage French Enamelware

Antique enamel spice jar sets make beautiful decorative features thanks to their matching shapes, traditional lettering and colourful patterns.

Displayed on wooden shelving, they can be paired with antique enamel coffee pots, vintage glass jars or traditional coffee grinders.

Blue-and-white collections create a delicate decorative effect, while floral designs introduce warmth and elegance.

A matching set may also be displayed inside a cabinet alongside other collectible French enamelware.
