Antique Serving & Decorative Pieces

What Are Antique Serving Pieces?

In traditional French tableware, the expression pièces de forme refers to objects with distinctive shapes and specialised functions, rather than ordinary flat plates.

Soup tureens, covered serving dishes, sauceboats, vegetable dishes, compotiers, pitchers and decorative serving bowls are among the pieces associated with this category.

These objects were designed for presenting food, completing dinner services or enhancing the appearance of an elegant table.

Their construction may involve carefully shaped handles, lids, spouts, feet and raised decorative details.

Today, antique serving pieces are appreciated for their craftsmanship, historical interest and decorative qualities.

Different Types of Antique and Vintage Serving Pieces

Antique Soup Tureens

Traditional soup tureens are among the most distinctive objects in antique dinner services.

Made from porcelain, earthenware or ceramic, they may feature elegant handles, decorative lids and delicate floral patterns.

A white porcelain tureen can become a beautiful feature on a sideboard, while a colourful example may complement an existing antique tableware collection.

Vintage Terrines and Covered Dishes

Antique terrines were traditionally designed for preparing or presenting particular culinary specialities.

Some feature sculptural lids or imaginative shapes inspired by animals, fruits and other decorative subjects.

These distinctive pieces can appeal to collectors of traditional ceramics and decorative objects.

Antique Gravy Boats and Sauceboats

Traditional gravy boats reflect the attention once given to the presentation of meals.

Some are attached to matching underplates, while others feature unusual handles, pouring spouts or decorative finishes.

Examples made from French ironstone, porcelain or earthenware can be collected individually or used to complete a matching service.

Antique Vegetable Dishes, Compotiers and Serving Bowls

Covered vegetable dishes, traditional fruit stands, pedestal bowls and decorative serving dishes reveal a wide variety of shapes.

Their proportions, ornamental details and original finishes contribute to their appeal as both historic tableware and decorative objects.

Vintage Pitchers, Jugs and Decanters

Some antique serving pieces also belong to the tradition of drinkware and pouring vessels.

Stoneware pitchers, ceramic jugs, pewter teapots and crystal decanters illustrate the variety of materials and manufacturing traditions represented in antique collections.

Decorative Baskets and Unusual Serving Pieces

Vintage ceramic baskets, pierced dishes, sculptural bowls and original serving accessories complete this collection.

Certain examples feature particularly elaborate shapes that make them attractive objects for interior display.

Materials and Historic Manufacturers

Antique serving pieces were produced using a wide range of materials.

Porcelain is appreciated for its refined appearance, delicate surfaces and intricate decorative details.

Earthenware and ironstone offer a variety of patterns, colours and forms associated with traditional ceramic manufacturers.

Stoneware is admired for its distinctive glazes, textures and shapes.

Decorative ceramics may feature sculptural or figurative designs, including pieces inspired by the pottery traditions of Vallauris.

Glass and crystal introduce transparency, reflections and elegance to traditional serving vessels.

At Brocante Déco, our changing selection may include pieces associated with Longwy, Sarreguemines, Saint-Uze, Vallauris and other French or European ceramic traditions.

Makers and origins are identified in individual product descriptions when sufficient information is available.

How Can You Identify an Antique Serving Piece?

Several characteristics may help establish the origin and approximate period of a traditional serving object.

Shape and Proportions

The overall silhouette, pedestal, lid, handles or pouring spout may provide clues about the object's original purpose.

Materials and Construction

Porcelain, earthenware, stoneware, crystal and metal each have different manufacturing characteristics.

Decorative Details

Floral patterns, relief ornaments, gilding, hand-painted designs and colourful glazes may reflect particular styles or periods.

Makers' Marks and Backstamps

Some antique objects feature original manufacturers' marks, decorative reference numbers or inscriptions.

Condition

Chips, cracks, glaze crazing, worn gilding and possible restorations should be examined carefully.

Together, these details may help identify a piece, although an exact manufacturing date cannot always be established.

How Can You Complete an Antique Dinner Service?

A soup tureen, gravy boat or vintage serving dish can be particularly interesting to collectors wishing to complete an incomplete dinner service.

When looking for a matching item, compare the manufacturer, decorative pattern, dimensions and shape.

Two pieces bearing the same makers' mark do not necessarily belong to the same range.

Collectors may also choose to combine different but complementary pieces, creating elegant table settings through shared colours, materials or decorative motifs.

This approach makes it possible to create a personal table arrangement without requiring a perfectly matching set.

Decorating with Antique Serving Pieces

Antique serving pieces can become beautiful decorative objects, even when they are no longer used for their original purpose.

On a sideboard, a large soup tureen or decorated terrine can become an elegant focal point.

Inside a display cabinet, a beautifully ornamented sauceboat, Longwy enamel piece or sculptural ceramic bowl can be displayed among other collectibles.

On a dining table, an antique compotier, decorative basket or unusual serving dish can form the centre of an attractive arrangement.

In a kitchen, stoneware pitchers and traditional serving vessels can complement carefully selected vintage accessories.

Combining porcelain, glass, wood and ceramics creates refined arrangements that highlight the individual shapes and textures of these historic objects.

Can Antique Serving Pieces Still Be Used?

Some antique serving pieces may retain their original practical function, but their suitability for food contact should be verified before use.

Old glazes, decorative finishes, previous restorations and general condition may require particular caution.

Antique soup tureens, terrines and ceramic serving pieces should not automatically be considered oven-safe, microwave-safe or dishwasher-safe.

Unless food-contact suitability has been reliably established, we recommend decorative or collectible use.
